Once, the sea came to the land,
And no one seemed to understand.
We learnt a word we did not know
By watching water rise and flow.

Years went by. We carried on.
The waves receded. News moved on.

Now mountains send the water down
Through quiet homes, through field and town.
A “tsunami from the sky,” they say.
Another new phrase for an older price we pay.

Fire can be fought.
Walls can be made.
But when water comes,
we wait for it to fade.

And somewhere, far from what we see,
someone pays for what we choose to be.

Perhaps the warning isn’t new.

Perhaps
we simply stopped listening.

And perhaps the help we wait to see
was always meant to start with me.

Not from the heavens, not from above,
but human hands and human love.

If there is God in you and me,
perhaps that is the God we need to see.

Awaken that, and we may find
a gentler way to treat mankind.

And if you’re wondering,
“What can I do?”

You do you.

I won’t tell you what to do.
I’ll only tell you
what I will do.
