When Answers Become Easy, What Happens to Thinking?
What friction used to force us to do.
AI is making answers easier to get. I’m beginning to wonder what else the effort of getting to an answer was doing for us.
I’ve been thinking about something as AI makes answers easier to get.
For most of my career, getting to an answer took effort.
You searched for information.
You spoke to people.
You compared views.
Sometimes you worked with incomplete information and had to make sense of it yourself.
That effort was not always efficient.
But I wonder if it was doing something else for us too.
It forced us to think.
Today, AI can give me analysis, alternatives and possible answers in seconds.
That is incredibly useful.
But when we remove so much of the effort involved in getting to an answer, do we also remove some of the thinking that used to happen along the way?
I’ve started noticing this even in my own use of AI.
An answer appears quickly. It sounds reasonable. And it is very easy to move on.
But perhaps that is exactly when I need to slow down.
Do I agree with it?
What is it missing?
Is this even the right question?
And more importantly, is this something worth doing in the first place?
We have spent years trying to make information easier to access.
AI may take that much further.
That is progress.
But maybe one of the things we will have to learn is how to preserve some of the thinking that friction used to force upon us.
Not because the old way was better.
But because judgment still needs to come from somewhere.
